The Steepest Furnicular Railway of Europe
The Gelmer furnicular railway takes you to Gelmersee, a lake on 1850 metres above sea level. This lovely lake is the starting point for hiking tours through the varied nature of the Grimsel. With a declivity of 106% it is the steepest furnicular railway of Europe. Hiking tipp: Take the trail from the ground station of the Gelmer railway and follow the Saumerweg to Kuenzentaennlein. Walk around Gelmersee after the ascent via Stockseeli. Come full circle with the skid on the furnicular. (Duration: 3 - 4 hours, with the circuit around the lake 5 - 6 hours).
